How to make a Bat or Ghost Charm
Here’s another Hallowe’en make. A hanging, felt Bat or Ghost charm.
Attach it to your School Bag with light reflective dots on the reverse.
We’ve made this from materials (felt, stranded cotton, iron on reflective fabric) from the-S box October Illumination
Both the charms are easy,
but for both you will need to learn to sew blanket stitch by hand. Ask your Grandma or go onto youtube -there are loads of tutorials.
you’ll just need a bit of patience…
Draw out some spooky Hallowe’en designs onto paper
and cut them out to use as templates.
Pin the templates to felt and cut out two of each;
a back and a front.
Now cut out discs of the iron-on reflective material
As you can see, I drew around a thread reel !
and adhere them to the right side of the back piece.
(use an iron with a cloth)
Use a glue gun (with caution)
to attach, eyes, fangs and an oooo mouth to the front of the bat and ghost
For extra effect, we have used a contrast orange thread to stitch around the reflective shapes
Split a length of stranded cotton in half so that you are sewing with just three strands, and blanket stitch in a contrast colour around the edge of the back and front of the shapes.
Leave a gap before you finish stitching…
Stuff the shapes to make them gently 3D and finish blanket-stitching around the edges
Loop a length of satin cord though part of each felt shape.
Here’s what the back of each charm looks like
